This beginning of this chapter initiated during the summer of 2008 when Roberto Rivera met Robyn Frye at a conference in Chicago. Robyn, being a natural youth worker and community organizer, began working with youth using Fulfill The Dream in July 2009. Working for ten weeks through a summer jobs program, the youth engaged in an in depth analysis about the history and evolution of Hip-hop. The group then held a town hall meeting where they performed for parents, community members, and elected officials.
The group continued to an after school space where youth in the former program continued to help share the message of healing and hope through the Hip-hop arts. The message expanded also into other spaces, like a local church, and one Sunday youth even took the lead in organizing an entire service discussing the importance of Hip-hop in occupying spaces of spiritual development.
The program now has become a national model and is being used as a launch pad to other groups coming from all over the nation including Oakland, CA. For more information on the Oakland chapter, check back!
